GAME:
The PSP release of
Activision’s Spider-Man 2 game is really a stripped down
version of the full-blown multi-console release to herald in the
launch of a new system. And as impressive as the game looks, it
doesn’t really give you a good reason to shell out the bucks.
In the game you take on
the role of Spider-Man, naturally, and this version of the game is
broken up into different chapter segments, with various goals to
complete. We move through the basic plot of the movie, though
sidetracks are taken throughout the story for some unrelated
missions which pit you up against baddies and environments.
The basic controls of the
game allow you to swing, pick up objects, throw punches and kick at
a variety of henchmen and robotic adversaries, leading up to boss
fights and plot arcs. The basic, yet strategic fighting system
allows for a wide variety of maneuvers, and the ability to purchase
new moves makes the game a little deeper than your typical brawler.
The problem with the game
(as stated) comes from the short playing time…and the removal of
the more open-ended playing style from the original version. For the
price of the original console version you don’t have a lot of
incentive, especially if this is your second time around.
TECHNOLOGY:
Spider-Man 2
for the PSP handheld console is an impressive game, if only from a
technical standpoint. It is easily one of the best looking of the
launch titles, and shows off the system’s guns remarkably well if
you remember this is a handheld title.
The handling is a bit
slow in places, and the configuration can be hard to get used
to…but for the most part it really gives the competition a run for
its money without breaking a sweat.
The soundtrack is nicely
recorded with the original cast members, and the cutscenes
themselves are very pleasant to look at if that does it for you…
OVERALL:
But overall, the game
brings us nothing but a used product with nothing innovative to
share for its PSP release…and that’s the bottom line that we
have to look at. With so many options out there to choose from,
it’s best to be wise with what we have in order to get the most
out of our gaming experience.

Overall: C+ (Not exactly
worth the money)
